Buffered mud
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004248
A drilling fluid formulated with chemical agents that resist changes in pH, maintaining it within a desired range. This stability is required to manage the performance of pH-sensitive additives like polymers and to control corrosion, especially when drilling formations that may introduce acidic or basic contaminants into the wellbore. A common example is a lime-based mud, which uses excess lime (calcium hydroxide) to maintain a stable, high pH.
