pH test
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002767
The measurement of the acidity or alkalinity of a drilling fluid, made either with pH paper for a rough value or with a glass-electrode meter calibrated against buffers for an accurate one. API Recommended Practice 13B-1 gives the procedure for water-based muds, where pH is held at roughly 9 to 11 to limit corrosion and clay swelling. Oil-base muds are not tested for pH, because their continuous phase is not aqueous, and alkalinity is determined by titration instead.
