Baryte
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000280
A naturally occurring mineral, primarily barium sulfate (BaSO4), used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids to increase their density. Its high specific gravity (typically 4.2 to 4.5 g/cm3) allows for effective control of formation pressures and prevention of kicks. Baryte must meet API specifications for purity, particle size, and soluble alkaline earth metals.
