Cake

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004252

The layer of solid particles deposited on the wall of a borehole as the liquid phase of the drilling fluid, or filtrate, penetrates a permeable formation. This accumulation of mud solids, including clays and weighting agents, forms a barrier that reduces further fluid loss into the rock. The thickness and permeability of the filter cake are measured in a static filter press test according to API Recommended Practice 13B, with desirable cakes being thin and impermeable.
