Sloughing shale
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003457
A condition where unstable shale formations disintegrate and fall into the wellbore, causing drilling problems such as stuck pipe, increased torque and drag, and poor hole cleaning. This instability results from interaction between the drilling fluid and the shale, leading to hydration, swelling, or mechanical failure. Maintaining proper mud weight and chemical inhibition can mitigate sloughing shale.
