Slips

Wedge-shaped devices with serrated inserts that fit into the rotary table or spider to grip and support the drill pipe or casing. Slips prevent the tubulars from falling into the wellbore when they are not being held by the elevators. They are manually or hydraulically operated by the rig crew.
