Smectite
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003474
A group of 2:1 phyllosilicate clay minerals characterized by their expandable crystal lattice, allowing them to absorb water and swell. Montmorillonite is a common member of this group. Smectites can cause formation damage in reservoirs and contribute to borehole instability during drilling due to their swelling behavior.
