Smile
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003476
A curved, smile-shaped artifact on a migrated seismic section. It appears when migration spreads an isolated noise spike, a bad trace or the abrupt edge of the data along its semicircular operator, and it is most familiar from Kirchhoff migration. Cleaning the input data and tapering the migration aperture reduce it, whereas unmigrated point diffractors appear as hyperbolas rather than smiles.
