Diffraction

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001078

The phenomenon where waves bend, spread out, and interfere as they pass around an obstacle or through an aperture. In seismic exploration, diffractions are generated from small-scale subsurface features such as faults, unconformity edges, pinch-outs, or isolated objects with dimensions smaller than a seismic wavelength. These events appear as hyperbolic curves on a seismic section before migration, and their energy is focused back to the originating point during processing.
