X-ray diffraction
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004499
An analytical technique used to identify the crystalline mineral components of a rock sample by bombarding it with X-rays and measuring the angles and intensities of the diffracted beams. Each crystalline mineral has a unique atomic structure that produces a characteristic diffraction pattern, acting as a fingerprint for identification. The analysis provides a quantitative breakdown of the rock's mineralogy, such as the percentages of quartz, calcite, and specific clay minerals like illite or smectite.
