SSMA copolymer
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003569
A synthetic polymer of styrene sulfonate and maleic anhydride used as a high-temperature deflocculant and fluid loss additive in water-based drilling muds. It adsorbs onto clay surfaces, imparting a negative charge that causes particles to repel each other, thus reducing viscosity and gel strengths. This copolymer is particularly effective in deep, hot wells where temperatures exceed 300°F (150°C), maintaining its performance in the presence of common contaminants like salt and calcium.
