Sulfonated asphalt
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004460
A drilling fluid additive derived from asphalt that has been chemically treated with sulfuric acid to introduce sulfonate groups. It functions as a fluid loss control agent, shale inhibitor, and rheology modifier in water-based drilling muds. This additive forms a thin, impermeable filter cake on the wellbore wall, reducing fluid invasion into permeable formations.
