Asphalt

A black, sticky, highly viscous form of petroleum, also known as bitumen, composed primarily of heavy hydrocarbons. It occurs naturally in tar sands or as a residue from petroleum distillation. Asphalt is used extensively in road construction and roofing, and its natural occurrences can indicate underlying oil reservoirs.
