Tar sand

A naturally occurring mixture of sand, clay, water, and bitumen, a very heavy and viscous form of petroleum. The bitumen in tar sands is too viscous to flow at reservoir temperatures and pressures, requiring thermal or mining methods for extraction. Major deposits are found in Alberta, Canada, and the Orinoco Belt in Venezuela.
