Threshold potential
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012032
The critical level of membrane potential that must be reached in an excitable cell, such as a neuron or muscle cell, to trigger an action potential. When the membrane potential depolarizes to this specific value, voltage-gated sodium channels open rapidly, leading to a regenerative influx of sodium ions. This rapid depolarization initiates the nerve impulse or muscle contraction.
