Excitotoxicity
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004197
The pathological process by which nerve cells are damaged and killed by excessive stimulation from excitatory neurotransmitters, particularly glutamate. This overstimulation leads to an influx of calcium ions into the cell, triggering a cascade of destructive biochemical events. It is implicated in neurodegenerative diseases and acute brain injuries.
