Pyro
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009700
A prefix for a compound formed by heating another compound, usually with loss of water or another small molecule such as carbon dioxide. In inorganic acids it marks the product of condensing two acid molecules with loss of one water, as in pyrophosphoric acid, H4P2O7, from two H3PO4; in organic chemistry it appears in names such as pyroglutamic acid, formed by cyclizing glutamic acid.
