Acid rain
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000136
Precipitation, such as rain, snow, or fog, that has a pH lower than that of natural rainwater, typically below 5.6. It is caused by the emission of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere, which react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. These acids then fall to the Earth, causing environmental damage.
