Wash out

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012639

The removal of gases and particles from the air below a cloud by falling rain or snow, which dissolve or capture them on the way down. It is also called below-cloud scavenging, in contrast to rain out, which takes place inside the cloud as raindrops form around the particles. Soluble gases such as nitric acid and ammonia, and larger particles, are removed most efficiently.
