Rain out
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009907
The process by which atmospheric aerosols and soluble gases are removed from the atmosphere by being incorporated into cloud droplets or ice crystals, which then fall to the Earth's surface as precipitation. This is an efficient wet deposition mechanism for cleansing the atmosphere. It differs from washout, which involves removal by falling precipitation below the cloud.
The process by which atmospheric pollutants are removed from the air and deposited onto the Earth's surface through precipitation, such as rain, snow, or fog. This mechanism involves the dissolution of gaseous pollutants or the scavenging of particulate matter by water droplets. It contributes to the wet deposition of substances like acid rain components.
