Retro
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010300
A prefix with several established meanings. In carotenoid and retinoid names it shows that every single and double bond of the conjugated polyene chain has shifted by one position, as in retro-retinoids; in peptide names it marks the reversed amino acid sequence; and in reaction names it marks the reverse of a known reaction, as in the retro-Diels-Alder cleavage of a cyclohexene into a diene and a dienophile. A retro-inverso peptide combines the reversed sequence with inverted chirality at each residue.
