Carotenoids

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001676

A class of tetraterpenoids, which are organic pigments with structures formally derived from a C40 polyene backbone. These compounds are synthesized by plants, algae, and some microorganisms, producing yellow, orange, and red colors in nature. The class is divided into two main groups: carotenes, which are pure hydrocarbons like β-carotene, and xanthophylls, which contain oxygen atoms.
