Prenol lipids

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013431

A class of lipids built from isoprene units, the five-carbon building blocks IPP and DMAPP (isopentenyl and dimethylallyl diphosphate) that cells make by the mevalonate pathway, joined in chains of one or more units. The class spans chemically unrelated functional molecules, among them the fat-soluble vitamins A, E and K, the carotenoids and quinones such as ubiquinone.
