Prenols
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009395
Alcohols of the general formula H(CH2C(CH3)=CHCH2)nOH, whose carbon skeleton consists of one or more head-to-tail isoprene units. The simplest member is prenol itself, 3-methylbut-2-en-1-ol (n = 1), with geraniol (n = 2) and farnesol (n = 3) as longer chains. Dimethylallyl pyrophosphate, the pyrophosphate ester of prenol, is a five-carbon starting unit in terpenoid biosynthesis.
