Polyprenols

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009229

Long-chain linear isoprenoid alcohols built from more than four isoprene units, with a single hydroxyl group at the alpha end of the chain. They occur in plants, fungi and bacteria, where they contribute to membrane structure and, as phosphorylated forms, carry sugars in glycosylation, as with bacterial undecaprenyl phosphate. They differ from dolichols, which share the chain but have the alpha isoprene unit saturated.
