Terpenes

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011882

A large class of naturally occurring hydrocarbons derived from the combination of isoprene units, which have the molecular formula C₅H₈. Terpenes are classified by the number of isoprene units they contain, such as monoterpenes (C₁₀), sesquiterpenes (C₁₅), and diterpenes (C₂₀). Oxygen-containing derivatives of terpenes are known as terpenoids.
