Carotenes
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001675
A class of tetraterpene hydrocarbons, characterized by their orange-yellow pigmentation and insolubility in water. These compounds are biosynthesized by plants and algae, and are responsible for the color of many fruits and vegetables. Beta-carotene is a prominent example, serving as a precursor to vitamin A in animals.
