Cardo polymer
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001674
A polymer whose single-strand main chain carries many loop-like ring groups, each ring sharing exactly one atom with the backbone, typically a quaternary carbon such as C9 of fluorene. The bulky rings stiffen the chain and disrupt packing, giving a high glass-transition temperature together with good solubility and large free volume. Polyimides built from 9,9-bis(4-aminophenyl)fluorene are a common example and are studied for gas-separation membranes.
