Rotaxanes
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010439
Mechanically interlocked molecular architectures consisting of a dumbbell-shaped molecule threaded through a macrocyclic ring, where the ring is prevented from dissociating by bulky end groups on the dumbbell. The components are not covalently bonded but are held together by a topological link. These compounds are a class of molecular machines with potential applications in nanotechnology.
