Catenanes
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001738
Compounds in which two or more rings are interlocked like links of a chain with no covalent bond between the rings, so they cannot be separated unless a covalent bond in one ring is broken. The simplest case has two interlocked rings, and chains of three or more rings are also known. They are made by template-directed synthesis and serve as building blocks for switchable molecular systems.
