Rotaxane monomer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010436

A monomer whose molecule is itself a rotaxane, with a macrocycle threaded on an axle that carries bulky end groups, and which also bears polymerizable groups on the ring, the axle or both. Polymerizing it gives a rotaxane polymer in which the repeating units keep their interlocked rings, so the mechanical bond is built into the monomer rather than formed afterwards. This differs from threading rings onto an already formed chain.
