Ionene
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006099
A polymer whose macromolecules carry ionic groups within the main chain itself, most commonly quaternary ammonium groups separated by short hydrocarbon spacers, so the charge sits in the backbone and not on side groups. Ionenes are made, for example, by reacting a ditertiary amine with a dihalide. Aliphatic ones are named x,y-ionene, where x and y are the numbers of methylene groups between successive nitrogen atoms.
