Azo compounds

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001051

Derivatives of diazene (HN=NH) where both hydrogen atoms are replaced by hydrocarbyl groups, resulting in the general formula R−N=N−R'. The characteristic functional group is the azo group, −N=N−. These compounds are known for their intense colors, and many synthetic dyes, such as methyl orange and para red, belong to this class.
