Azlactones

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012912

Oxazol-5(4H)-ones, five-membered heterocycles with a ring oxygen, a ring nitrogen, and a lactone-type carbonyl, formed by cyclodehydration of N-acyl alpha-amino acids. They are activated acyl derivatives, which makes them useful in the Erlenmeyer-Plochl synthesis of amino acids from aldehydes and acylglycines. They are also the intermediates through which the C-terminal residue can racemize during some peptide couplings.
