Diabetes mellitus type 1

A chronic autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreatic islets, leading to absolute insulin deficiency. This destruction results in hyperglycemia and requires lifelong insulin therapy for management. It is often diagnosed in childhood or adolescence and is distinct from type 2 diabetes.
