Frame-shift mutation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004642
A type of gene mutation caused by the insertion or deletion of a number of nucleotides not divisible by three in a DNA sequence. This alteration shifts the reading frame of the codons during protein synthesis, leading to a completely different amino acid sequence downstream from the mutation. Such mutations often result in non-functional proteins due to premature stop codons.
