Back-mutation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001080
A genetic mutation that restores the original wild-type sequence or phenotype that was lost due to an earlier forward mutation. This reversal can occur through a true back-mutation, where the exact original nucleotide sequence is restored, or through a suppressor mutation at a different site that compensates for the original mutation. Back-mutations are often studied in microbial genetics to understand mutation rates and mechanisms.
