Backscatter
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001081
The deflection of radiation, such as light, X-rays, or electrons, through an angle greater than 90 degrees from its original direction of incidence. This phenomenon occurs when radiation interacts with a material, with some of the incident energy being reflected or scattered back towards the source. It is a principle applied in techniques like backscatter electron imaging in scanning electron microscopy.
