Backscatter

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000260

  1. The redirection of radiation, such as light or sound waves, back towards its source due to interaction with particles or surfaces in the atmosphere. This phenomenon is measured by instruments like lidar and radar to detect atmospheric constituents or precipitation. The intensity of backscatter depends on the wavelength of the radiation and the size, shape, and composition of the scattering particles.

  2. The portion of power scattered back in the incident direction.
