Backpropagation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003771

An algorithm used to train artificial neural networks by iteratively adjusting the network's internal weights to minimize the difference between the predicted output and the actual observed values. It calculates the gradient of the loss function with respect to the network's weights, propagating this error information backward from the output layer to the input layer. This method is a cornerstone of machine learning applications in weather forecasting and climate model post-processing.
