Backscatter
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000247
The portion of wave energy that is reflected or scattered from a medium back toward the energy source. In seismic exploration, backscattered energy from subsurface interfaces and heterogeneities contributes to the recorded wavefield, providing information about rock properties and textures. Side-scan sonar uses acoustic backscatter to create images of the seafloor, mapping features and sediment types.
