Lidar ratio
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006937
The ratio of the extinction coefficient to the backscatter coefficient for a given atmospheric aerosol or cloud particle. This value characterizes the optical properties of the scattering medium, indicating how much light is absorbed or scattered forward versus how much is scattered directly back to the lidar receiver. It varies significantly with aerosol type, ranging from approximately 20 to 100 steradians.
