Life zone

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010589

A distinct belt of vegetation and associated animal life defined by specific climatic conditions, primarily temperature and precipitation, which vary with latitude and altitude. These zones are arranged in bands, ascending from warmer, lower elevations to colder, higher ones, or from the equator toward the poles. For example, climbing a mountain in the southwestern United States can take one through zones equivalent to traveling from Mexico to Canada, from the Sonoran to the Arctic-Alpine zone.
