Arid zone

A region characterized by a severe lack of available water, to the extent of hindering or preventing the growth and development of plant and animal life. These zones receive very low annual precipitation, and potential evapotranspiration far exceeds the moisture supply. According to the United Nations Environment Programme's aridity index, arid zones have a precipitation to potential evapotranspiration ratio between 0.05 and 0.20.
