Mutation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007710

A permanent alteration in the nucleotide sequence of a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecule. These changes can range from a single base pair substitution to the insertion or deletion of large segments of genetic material. Mutations can arise spontaneously or be induced by external agents like radiation or certain chemicals.
