Gene

A fundamental unit of heredity, consisting of a specific sequence of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or ribonucleic acid (RNA) that codes for a particular protein or functional RNA molecule. Genes are located on chromosomes and transmit genetic information from one generation to the next. Each gene occupies a specific locus on a chromosome.
