Cis, trans

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002089

Stereochemical descriptors used to specify the configuration of substituents relative to a reference plane in a molecule. In the cis isomer, substituents are on the same side of the plane, while in the trans isomer, they are on opposite sides. This notation is applied to disubstituted cycloalkanes and alkenes, although for alkenes with more than two different substituents, the E,Z notation is preferred.
