Cis/trans photoisomerisation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012981

A photochemical process where a molecule undergoes a change in its geometric configuration around a double bond upon absorption of light, converting between its cis and trans isomers. This transformation involves rotation around the double bond, which is typically restricted in the ground state but becomes possible in the excited state. Azobenzene and stilbene are classic examples of compounds exhibiting this phenomenon.
