E, Z
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003538
A system of nomenclature used to unambiguously assign the configuration of substituents around a double bond, particularly in alkenes. 'E' (entgegen, German for 'opposite') indicates that the higher-priority groups on each carbon of the double bond are on opposite sides. 'Z' (zusammen, German for 'together') indicates they are on the same side, based on Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority rules.
