E/Z photoisomerization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004317

A photochemical process involving the interconversion between the E (entgegen) and Z (zusammen) stereoisomers of a molecule, typically an alkene, upon absorption of light. This isomerization occurs via rotation around the double bond in an excited electronic state. The direction of isomerization depends on the wavelength of light and the specific molecule.
